October 7, 2009 @ 5pm

This week the sun is lower still and our balcony and living room is receiving even more light.

You can see here that the angle of the sun is getting lower as it gets later in the season. Last week at this time the balcony above was blocking most of the sunlight, but this week you can see that the sun is at a lower angle and is reaching our balcony now.

There is not very much change from last week to this week, the afternoon sun is diffused by the trees and balcony above and doesn't create a lot of shadows. As you can see the balcony is lit pretty well, but the light fails to light the space very well.

For the first sketch series I am photographing my living room in my apartment. The sliding glass door that goes out onto the balcony is the only source of daylight in the common living space of the apartment. It faces northwest, so it receives mostly afternoon light. However, there is another balcony above it which blocks a significant amount of sunlight during the day, and the foliage blocks a good amount during the afternoon as well. This is good in the summer, because the sun doesn't contribute to the heat. And in the winter, when the sun is lower in the sky and the trees are bare of leaves, it receives more light.
